Making Time For Our Health and Wellness; Yoga

Sep 13, 2007 by Michele Cunningham
I am a proponent for good health. The means by which we achieve this goal are varied and sometimes obscured by the overwhelming amount of information out there on holistic health and alternative medicine. My goal is to high light one healing modality at a time. My focus for you today is on yoga because it meets the requirements of good health for mind and body simultaneously. My hope is for you to experience the benefits for yourself!

We live in an age of hectic rigid schedules, and time doesn't always lend itself to taking care of our health, right? In fact we do have the ability to make time for what ever we deem most important in our lives. What is at the top of your priority list? Is your health even remotely close? If we so choose, we can easily make our health and well being our number one priority. How many hours do you waste watching television or surfing the net, filling your head with needless things while your body deteriorates? All you need is an hour and a half of your time devoted to healthy practices each day. That's not much to change in a single day. It is scientifically proven that by making these changes to your life-style, you will in turn have more energy as well as a healthier mind and body.

The most important thing is to choose a few healing modalities of interest to you and try them. Stay with them and be consistent in your practice. Remember that if you want to effect positive change, you need only stick with something that draws your attention. Yoga draws my attention and I've benefited from it tremendously, so I will share the benefits of this healing modality with you.

Yoga and its Benefits

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a system of self healing that originated in India. It has its root in Hinduism and Brahmanism, although you do not have to seek the spiritual aspects of yoga as did it's originators to benefit from the practice. The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word 'yuj' meaning to yoke, join or unite. On the spiritual plane, it means union of the self with that of the universe. Yoga is the union of body, mind, emotions and intellect. Yoga is the practice of getting into specific body postures and using specific breath control.

There are many styles of yoga to choose from. I will focus here on one particular discipline called Iyengar Yoga. Iyengar Yoga is distinguished from other styles of yoga mainly by three key elements: technique, sequence and timing.
  • Technique
By practicing yoga one learns finer adjustments in the alignment of how one performs Asana and Pranayama. Asana refers to posture and pranayama refers to breath control.

  • Sequence
Refers to the order in which asana and pranayama are practiced.

  • Timing
Refers to the length of time spent in postures and on specific breathing.

What are the benefits of Yoga?
  • Increasing Flexibility
As we learn the Asana's and Pranayama's, this control of our body acts to facilitate stretching and strengthening of the muscle, tendons and bones.

  • Massaging of all of the Organs in the body
Our breath control while in specific postures helps to reach all of the tissues in our body, including our organs. This stimulation of the organs in turn benefits us by helping to prevent disease. One of the long lasting benefits of Yoga is that it builds and awareness in us of our own body.

  • Detoxification
By stretching muscles and joints as well as massaging organs, Yoga enhances our cardiovascular and lymphatic systems so that they may work more efficiently, in turn flushing out toxins and providing oxygen and nutrients that our bodies need. This leads to benefits such as delayed aging, enhanced energy, a happier emotional state, and a healthy mind.

  • Muscular Tone
By keeping a regimented practice our bodies benefit by building muscle strength which in turn gives us the enhanced appearance of a tone body.
I have also included my favorite Yoga instructor here so that you may have easy access to beginning your new practice or enhancing your already existing healthy regiment. Peace and wellness to you all!

May I please introduce to you, Carrie Hersocovici!

Carrie has studied yoga since 1996, dedicating herself to intense independent practice, research and study. She has studied Hatha Yoga, Shivanada, and Iyengar Yoga in Los Angeles under yoga masters and mentors Steve Ross, Matthew Reyes, Bryan Kest and Ish Moran. Her yoga philosophy and dedication recently led her to India where she continued her study of yoga under yoga guru Senthil Kumar. Carries next training in India is January 2008.

Carrie's teaching style motivates her students to feel cared for as she inspires them to share the magic of yoga. Her compassion for people helps her students to feel content in their own bodies through their own yoga practice.

"I came to yoga seeking a fun form of exercise and my practice quickly became a sacred time of renewal and exploration. Ten years later, I gratefully go to my mat daily because I know the tremendous healing, rejuvenating and transforming powers of yoga. It is my primary objective to help students come to know that yoga will organically heal and guide them. Yoga is a beautiful continual process that grows and changes each day, and as a teacher it is my job to help students become comfortable where they are in the moment, and enjoy the journey together."

With people searching for more ways to feel relaxed, peaceful and calm, both in their body, mind and soul, it is not surprising how much the practice of yoga has grown in the West. Her classes provide a stimulating and safe environment to relax and begin to release pent up stress, emotion and anxiety through stretching, breathing and movement. Carrie's instruction helps students to develop strength, flexibility, and balance in order to live a healthier, happier and more peaceful life. She is experienced in leading group classes, and also offers private sessions.
